San José
de Gracia
A quiet jewel in the Altos de Jalisco highlands — 95 km northeast of Guadalajara, a world away from the ordinary.
Our Town
Where the highlands
slow everything down
Nestled at 1,980 meters above sea level in the municipality of Tepatitlán, San José de Gracia is a historic town of cobblestone streets, the centuries-old Parroquia de San José, and the kind of unhurried warmth the Altos de Jalisco are known for. Come for a weekend — stay for the cold ones, the tequila, and the homemade chorizo and cheese.
Our History
A Town with a Story
San José de Gracia has been shaped by faith, family, and the rhythms of the highlands for over two centuries. This short film captures its soul.
Festividades
Celebrations &
Traditions
San José de Gracia comes alive throughout the year with religious festivals, cultural gatherings, and the warmth of Alteño traditions.
March 19
Fiesta Patronal de San José
The town's biggest celebration — honoring Saint Joseph, the patron saint. Though the feast day falls on March 19, the festivities are celebrated during the first 10 days of May with masses, processions, music, and fireworks in the plaza.
March / April
Semana Santa
Holy Week brings solemn processions and religious observances through the cobblestone streets, a deeply rooted tradition in the Altos.
September 15–16
Fiestas Patrias
Independence celebrations fill the jardín with music, lights, and the traditional Grito de Independencia at midnight on September 15.
December 12
Virgen de Guadalupe
One of Mexico's most beloved celebrations — mañanitas, misa de gallo, and pilgrims honoring the Virgin through the night into dawn.
December 16–24
Las Posadas
Nine nights of candlelit processions, singing, piñatas, and ponche — a cherished Mexican Christmas tradition celebrated neighborhood by neighborhood.
Every Sunday
Tianguis Semanal
The weekly market brings fresh produce, local cheeses, handmade goods, and antojitos to the town center — a living piece of everyday Alteño culture.
