Festivals & Fiestas

San José de Gracia comes alive throughout the year with religious festivals, civic celebrations, and the steady weekly rhythm of the Sunday tianguis. If your timing works out, lining up a visit with one of these is the surest way to see the town at its fullest.

First 10 days of May (saint's day March 19)

Fiesta Patronal de San José

The town's biggest celebration of the year. Although March 19 is the official feast day for Saint Joseph, the town's actual festivities run the first 10 days of May with masses, processions, music in the plaza, fireworks, and a long string of regional bandas. The plaza is the center of everything; expect packed streets and visiting paisanos from the US.

March or April (varies — week before Easter)

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

Holy Week brings solemn processions through the cobblestone streets, Vía Crucis on Good Friday, and Mass at the Parroquia. The traditions are deeply rooted in Los Altos — quieter and more reverent than the Fiesta Patronal, but heavily attended.

September 15–16

Fiestas Patrias (Mexican Independence)

Independence celebrations fill the jardín with music, lights, traditional Mexican food, and the Grito de Independencia at midnight on September 15. The morning of the 16th brings parades and civic ceremonies.

December 12 (with mañanitas the night of December 11)

Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe

One of Mexico's most beloved religious celebrations. Mañanitas at the church start in the early hours, followed by misa de gallo and pilgrims through the day. The Parroquia is packed; the surrounding plaza fills with food vendors and processions.

December 16–24 (nine consecutive nights)

Las Posadas

Nine nights of candlelit processions, singing, piñatas, and ponche — a cherished Mexican Christmas tradition celebrated neighborhood by neighborhood. Each night a different family hosts.

Every Sunday

Tianguis Semanal (Weekly Market)

Every Sunday morning, the centro fills with vendors selling fresh produce, local cheeses (the panela and cotija from Los Altos are excellent), handmade tortillas, and antojitos hot off the comal. Best around 10–11 AM. A weekly piece of everyday Alteño life.
